Clearwire
Clearwire provides high-speed, wireless, mobile internet services over a 4G network. Desmic Corp was instrumental in the initial evaluation of PTMP Radio systems and field testing. Based on the chosen radio solution, Desmic Corp was contracted to develop a deployable, cost-effective, integrated cabinet containing radio hardware, network switching gear, remote monitoring equipment, backhaul hardware, power rectification and distribution, and battery backup. Desmic Corp performed vendor evaluation and selection for cabinets, rectifiers, batteries, and remote site monitoring and management.

Based on the success of the site design and multiple special projects, Desmic Corp was contracted to design, construct, commission, and manage Clearwire's latest Engineering Laboratory. The new lab consists of 1200+ network components amongst 101 racks. In addition to power and cooling design (80 tons of Air conditioning, 177kW DC Power, 64kW AC Power), Desmic Corp was responsible for the entire Lab Network design and commissioning. Network included routing (BGP, OSPF, RIP), switching, Firewalls, OpenVPN, VPN tunnels to vendors, DHCP, DNS (authoritative and caching), NTP, LDAP/RADIUS (based on existing production implementation), Cacti, SNMP, FTP, Document Management (KnowledgeTree), RANCID (adapted for all network components and servers), load balancers, Linux and Windows servers, Build server (kickstart and ghost), HP Blade servers, VMware (VMware Server 2+ and ESXi 4+), and terminal servers. Design of the network included all of these core components/applications as well as physical layout, installation, cabling, and IP address management. As Clearwire is a 4G network operator, the Engineering Lab consisted of 17 separate networks, 10 of which supported a 4G RAN (WiMax and LTE, TDD and FDD). Desmic Corp was responsible for Radio layout and RF spectrum management as well.

The design, construction, and implementation of this Lab was conducted over a 13 month timeline. Relocating the existing Lab into the new facility and installing/commissioning the new networks was completed with no impact to the Engineering Test Schedule.

Clearwire Special Projects

  • Hurricane Katrina - Desmic Corp, along with 2 Clearwire engineers, designed, installed, and commissioned an entire Wireless Broadband network in and around Biloxi, MS following the hurricane. The first tower was on air and supporting customers in 4 days. After 13 days, the network consisted of 7 sites covering 88 square miles, serving internet and telephone customers. A customized Asterisk PBX system was installed for VoIP capabilities and the network processed over 18,000 phone calls in the first month. The emergency network continued as installed for over 3 years before being decommissioned by Clearwire.
  • Portable Network - Design and Construct a portable Wireless Broadband Network that worked and functioned identically to a full-scale commercial network. Document and train Clearwire personnel to deploy/maintain the portable network for demonstrations and trade shows.
  • CPE Test Station - Testing customer returned equipment for redeployment is a costly endeavor. It involves hours of personnel time to receive, inspect, return to vendor, re-receive, and ship for fulfillment. Vendor turn-around time can be a major roadblock in the RMA process. Desmic Corp designed, constructed, installed, and trained Clearwire personnel on a stand-alone Test Station for Customer Premise Equipment. The Test Station consisted of a RAN connected to a laptop and radiating in a small RF chamber. The Test Station was able to test 5 CPEs at a time with throughput of 500+ units per day. Test Data was automatically uploaded to a database with a Web front-end for defect tracking and data analysis. The project was so successful, the CPE vendor created a similar platform for sale to their other customers.
  • RAN-in-a-can - Clearwire's rapid network deployment and lean staffing philosophy created gaps in their efforts to commission and certify PoPs. Desmic Corp was contracted to design and build a portable RAN that could be shipped anywhere in Clearwire's coverage area, plugged into a PoP, and certify Core Network functionality. 8 portable units were constructed inside roll-around, shock-mounted shipping cases and were used nation-wide to certify PoPs and decrease the time-to-market for a key part of Clearwire's network.
  • As a cost conscious, rapidly growing company, Clearwire was also able to use Desmic Corp's Facilities services: office space planning, TIs, vendor / mail / printing services, utilities, and multiple office/lab relocations.
In its current role, Desmic Corp provides Lab management and continued software and hardware testing for current system components.

International Telecommunications Union
The ITU, a division of the United Nations, received a grant from the Craig and Susan McCaw Foundation to deploy Wireless Broadband Networks in 6 African Countries. Desmic Corp was the sole Wireless Industry Expert retained by the ITU to design and deploy the network and train the local personnel on operating, maintaining, and expanding the Wireless Broadband Network. After an initial site survey, a network design and complete BOM were submitted to the ITU for a network in Burundi. After the components were procured and delivered, Desmic Corp spent 3 weeks in-Country deploying the network and training local personnel. After 6 months, the Wireless Broadband network covered 550 square miles, had 350+ customers, transfers over 20Mbps aggregate network traffic, and provides free internet access to schools and hospitals across the country. Based on the success of the first deployment, the next 5 countries are being planned.

Craig and Susan McCaw Foundation
The Craig and Susan McCaw Foundation contracted Desmic Corp to deploy a cell site on Santa Cruz Island, an Island in the Channel Islands chain 25 miles off the coast of Southern California. The cell site consisted of an iDEN radio site with a repeater site, solar power, a generator, and battery backup. The cell site is currently on-air and carrying customer traffic.

RadioFrame Networks
As an employee of RadioFrame, the President of Desmic Corp was chief mechanical engineer and facilities manager for the company. Shown is the initial product offering from RadioFrame. Product design included a sheet metal card cage chassis and an easily installable plastic injection molded radio housing. Systems integration included digital and RF electronics along with backplanes, power supplies, and fans. Product lifecycle responsibilities included product design, agency certification, assembly and test, packaging, installation instructions, and continued cost reductions.

Additional contributions included facilities layout and space planning, multiple company relocations, development and implementation of a Change Management Board, and Research and Development of new product lines.

rovingIP.net
Based on a small networking device, rovingIP.net was poised to allow neutral party nation-wide roaming on WiFi networks. Desmic Corp was contracted to determine the printed circuit board space plan and design a tamper-proof housing. Design was completed with Pro/Engineer, molds were created for production parts, packaging was developed, and small-lot runs were manufactured.

AT&T Wireless
As an employee of AT&T Wireless' Fixed Wireless Service division, the President of Desmic Corp worked in various capacities in both manufacturing and product design.

Manufacturing projects included Printed Circuit Board Assembly (screen print, pick & place, reflow, bed-of-nails test, mfg. test), HALT and HASS test, cabinet assembly, automated robotic assembly, product packaging / warehousing / shipping, plant floor layout, equipment installation and certification, and SCADA and MMI design and implementation.

Design projects included robotic assembly equipment for high-speed manufacturing and Customer Premise Equipment for wireless high-speed data and voice.
